Control of Nosocomial Infections

Nosocomial or healthcare-associated infections (HCAI) appear in a patient under medical care in the hospital or other health care facility which was absent at the time of admission. Nosocomial infection is a recognized public health problem worldwide with a prevalence rate of 3.0-20.7% and an incidence rate of 5-10%. It has become increasingly obvious that infections acquired in the hospital lead to increased morbidity and mortality which has added noticeably to the economic burden.

Based on studies on the incidence and prevalence of nosocomial infections in Iran, it can be concluded that the incidence of these infections is high.

In our country, as in other countries, many activities and programs have been done in the field of controlling nosocomial infections. The executive agents of these programs include all people working in the hospital, including doctors, nurses, students, service and support staff, and administrators.

A few important principles govern the main measures that should be taken to prevent the spread of nosocomial infections in health-care facilities:

  • Hand hygiene
  • Use personal protective equipment (such as gloves, masks, hats, goggles and boots)
  • Safe injection methods, disinfection and hygiene of equipment and patient environment
  • Respiratory health

Isolation is the implementation of isolating precautions designed to prevent transmission of microorganisms by common routes in hospitals.
